The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will expand to 28 teams from the 2027 edition, to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda between June 19 and July 17, 2027.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the tournament will feature seven groups of four teams, with the qualification format to be announced later.
He also unveiled a major increase in prize money for the 2026 Women’s AFCON, raising the winners’ prize to $2 million, while each participating team will receive at least $150,000.
Motsepe further praised Africa’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and reaffirmed his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino ahead of his re-election.
