The militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, appears to be seeking to widen the scope of its offensive against the Nigerian state. It says, it will declare independence for the Niger Delta region on October 1, if the government of President Muhammadu Buhari does not restructure the country.
In a statement credited to their spokesperson, self-styled Brig. Gen. Murdoch Agbinibo, the NDA today said:
“Our prayer for Buhari and the Northern governors is that oil should be found in commercial quantity in the North, so they can let the Niger Delta go. The Buhari led government has failed Nigerians with their misdirected policies that have divided the country as such nobody wants to be part of that failed state not even the Niger Delta.
The NDA did not indicate that it got the mandate of the people of the Niger Delta region to contemplate a project that could be as delicate and important as the declaration of independence. The group also did not refer to the proposed meeting of Niger Delta traditional rulers and leaders of thought scheduled to hold in Warri tomorrow.
“The October 1st declaration of independence is still sacrosanct, if the Nigerian government fails to retrace its steps by restructuring this country, ” declared the Avengers.
Apparently alluding to its position that it is not into any negotiation with the Federal Government and that many people are only taking advantage of their struggle to make quick money, the Niger Delta Avengers threatened: “We want to warn the general public that those using NDA to defraud people, the day of reckoning is close.”(sic)
