Leader of the Indeginous People Of Biafra who is facing trial for alleged treason has said he is ready to
negotiate with the Federal Government.
Kanu who spoke through his lawyers, Ifeanyi Ejiofor and Amobi Nzelu at a news conference today, said he was not opposed to negotiation which will ensure his release from the “politically motivated and orchestrated” incarceration which he now suffers. The lawyers disclosed that Kanu has not been approached for any negotiations
so far.
According to Ejiofor: “He welcomes genuine political solution to this case. Nnamdi Kanu has people of proven integrity and impeccable character that will negotiate on his behalf on his demand when communication to this effect is established.
However, the lawyer, reacting to claims that the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) was
negotiating on Kanu’s behalf was quite emphatic: “We wish to inform the general public that Nnamdi Kanu has no connection, ties or any kind of relationship with members of MEND. As such, MEND has no implied, direct or express authority of Nnamdi Kanu to represent him or IPOB in any purpported negotiation going on between MEND and the Federal Government. The general public is accordingly advised to ignore, discountenance and disregard the falsehood being peddled by MEND.”
Ejiofor also maintained that the IPOB leader will not negotiate under the condition that he renounces his ideology. The lawyer claimed that IPOB was bigger than Kanu. “Kanu will not renounce his ideology. IPOB is bigger than him. He cannot say yes or no to renouncing it. But he is open to political resolution to the problem and I think a political solution will be easier to achieve than a legal one but Kanu must be released unconditionally.”
