A most horrific incident happened at Igbogbo community in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State in the wee hours of Thursday, September 29. Unidentified armed men reportedly gained entrance into a home and killed the entire six members of the family.

According to accounts from residents of the area, the victims of the gruesome murder included the head of the family who was identified as Celestine Nwokoye (a cab driver at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja) his wife and four children. Amongst Mr. Nwokoye’s slain children were two daughters, a three year old son and an eight–month old baby.

A certain John Udah, who lives close to the Nwokoye’s residence in Igbogbo told The Guardian: “It happened in the early hours. We heard gunshots but nobody knew what was happening and nobody could come out at that unholy hour. It was after the killers had gone and we rushed to the house that we knew the enormity of what had happened. By the time we got there, the father and the two children were already dead. The mother and the fifth person were still breathing; we rushed them to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. We can’t say who committed the extermination of a family, but I don’t think the killers were armed robbers. I suspect they (the Nwokoyes) were assassinated.”

However, the Lagos State Police Command who claimed knowledge of the incident have released a statement through its spokesperson, Dolapo Badmus, which suggests a possible clue to the identity of the masterminds of the killings.
