Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick has been elected as an executive committee member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
At the just concluded 39th CAF General Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Pinnick defeated the incumbent, Benin Republic’s Moucharafou Anjorin by 32 votes to 17 to emerge victorious in the keenly contested election. By this victory, Pinnick will represent Zone B in the CAF Executive Committee. He becomes the third Nigerian to be elected into CAF’s executive committee since its inception.
Pinnick is joined by Danny Jordan of South Africa representing Southern African Zone, Musa Bility of Liberia representing Western Africa Zone A, Suleiman Waberi of Djibouti representing Central/East African Zone and Faozi Lekjaa of Morocco representing Northern African Zone as members who have been elected into the CAF Executive Committee that will run from 2017 to 2021.
In a swift reaction, the Federal Government of Nigeria has congratulated Pinnick on his well deserved victory to serve on the executive seat of CAF.
In a statement signed by the Minister of Youths and Sport, Solomon Dalung, the Federal government expressed happiness on the achievement, adding that the inclusion of a Nigerian into the CAF seat is a victory for African football.
“This is a big achievement for Nigeria and our re-entry into African football politics,” Dalung said.
The FG also used the opportunity to felicitate with Ahmad Ahmad, the newly-elected CAF President and Pinnick’s candidate for the exalted office, urging him and the newly elected board, to be magnanimous in victory and operate an all-inclusive government.
