United States Senator, John McCain has said that Russian President, Vladmir Putin is a bigger threat to world security than the Islamic State in Iran and Syria (ISIS).
Senator McCain, who is the Chairman of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, stated this while speaking in an interview in Australia where he warned that the American Senate would push for sanctions against Russia for alleged interference in the last US presidential elections.
“I think he (Putin) is the premier and most important threat, more so than ISIS. I view the Russians as the far greatest challenge we have,” McCain told Australian Broadcasting Corporation television.
“So we need to have increased sanctions and hopefully when we are back from our recess, the Senate will move forward with sanctions on Russia and enact other penalties for Russian behaviour,” he added.
McCain, who is viewed as a big critic of President Donald Trump, further stated that although there was no evidence to prove that Russia succeeded in tampering with the outcome of the US elections, the Russians were still trying to influence elections in other countries including the recently-concluded French polls.
