The immediate past governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido was on Tuesday docked for allegedly inciting his supporters to violence ahead of the state’s local government elections slated for July 1.
Lamido, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has been in police custody in the city of Kano in neighbouring Kano State since Sunday morning after he was whisked away from his Sharada home by security operatives, following a petition filed by the Jigawa State government.
In the ruling delivered yesterday amidst heavy security, the Chief Magistrate of the Jigawa Magistrate’s court, Muhammad Lamin, refused Lamido bail and ordered that he be remanded in prison until May 4 when the court will open for the continuation of the trial.
Lamido is standing trial on a four-count charge of inciting public disturbance, defamation of character, criminal intimidation and disturbance of public peace, which are offences that contravene sections 113, 114, 392 and 394 of the Penal Code.
