Super Eagles and Wolverhampton of England’s goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme has been diagnosed with acute Leukaemia by his team doctors.

The diagnosis, which was made during his pre-season testing was revealed in a Twitter post released by the Wolves management on Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that Wolves are today, announcing that Carl Ikeme has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia,” the tweet read.

“Carl will now start an immediate course of chemotherapy as he begins a lengthy battle against the disease,” it added.

Wolve’s Managing Director, Laurie Dalrymple in a statement released on the team’s website said everyone at the club is shocked and saddened at the development that he hopes Carl will overcome and recover from.

“It would be an understatement to say that everyone at Wolves has been shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl’s diagnosis, “Dalrymple said.

“Similarly, it goes without saying that Carl and his family will receive the full support that we at Wolves can provide. We are all with him every single step of the way towards a full recovery.

“There are going to be some very tough times ahead, but he will receive the best possible care, aided and supported by own club doctor and medical team, as he embarks on the lengthy process of treatment,” he added.

The 31-year-old Carl who got injured last year while playing for the Championship side, last played for Nigeria against Zambia in a 2018 World Cup qualifying match at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state..

This development is a major blow to the Russia 2020 World Cup aspirations of the Super Eagles who have struggled to find a permanent replacement for former Captain and safe hands, Vincent Enyeama who retired from the national team in 2015.
