Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai has given a 40-day ultimatum for troops engaging Boko Haram insurgents to capture and deliver the leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau dead or alive.

The directive which was contained in a statement released on Friday and signed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Usman asked the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole (code name for the counter insurgency operation) to use all the arsenal at his disposal to capture Shekau on or before August 30, 2017.

“The COAS has directed the Theatre Commander of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, to capture Abubakar Shekau, the so-called and self-styled leader of Boko Haram terrorists group, dead or alive. He is to employ all the arsenal at the disposal of the Theatre Command to smoke out Shekau wherever he is hiding in Nigeria,” the statement said.

Lt. Gen. Buratai also used the medium to solicit for the support and co-operation of the general public in volunteering information that would lead to the accomplishment of the  task.

Shekau has been the subject of several reports declaring him either fatally wounded or dead over the years but he had more often than not, appeared in new videos denouncing the reports and mocking the Nigerian Army and government.
