A High Court sitting in Kaduna has remanded a whistleblower for allegedly providing false information to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on former Nigerian President, Arc. Namadi Sambo.
While reading out the charges before the court, the ICPC counsel, Elijah Akaakohol said the whistleblower, Abubakar Sani Chindo had on June 21, 2017, given a false information that he conveyed huge sums of money in both Nigerian and foreign currencies to the Ungwan Rimi GRA, Kaduna residence of Sambo which led to the residence being raided by ICPC operatives on June 28, 2017.
“That sometime in 2013, you conveyed huge sums of money both in Nigerian and other foreign currencies from Abuja Airport to a house in Ungwan Rimi GRA, Kaduna on the directive of a retired Army Officer, money which you suspected to be ill-gotten wealth and still lying in boxes in that said house at the moment of your report,” the charge read.
“And of which you made the commission of the ICPC to carry out a sting operation that turned out to be false. You hereby committed an offence, contrary to, and punishable under section 64 (3) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000,” it added.
The presiding Judge, Justice M.T. Aliyu ruled that Chindo, who pleaded not guilty and begged to be granted bail, be remanded in prison pending when he secures the services of a lawyer to prefect his bail conditions.
Chindo, if convicted, faces a prison term of ten years or a fine not exceeding N100,000 as provided by section 64 (3) of the ICPC act.
