Hoodlums numbering over a hundred on Tuesday invaded the Kogi State House of Assembly and attacked lawmakers, stripping a member naked in the process.
No sooner had the lawmakers settled down for the day’s plenary than the thugs arrived in three Hilux vans, rushed into the chambers and started beating members.
The member representing Igalamala/Odolu Constituency, Elder Friday Makama, who just formally resumed duty following a court declaration that his suspension was void appeared to be the target of the attackers as he was beaten and stripped naked.
Makama was suspended by the house in February for taking the Assembly to court for approving extra spending for the state governor while workers in the state were being owed backlogs of salaries.
He however approached the State’s High Court to challenge his unwarranted suspension. The court consequently ordered the leadership of the House to reinstate the lawmaker after declaring his suspension null and void.
Security operatives attached to the Assembly watched helplessly as the thugs, whom observers say are loyal to the Governor and leadership of the House harassed the lawmakers, prompting the Speaker, Iman Umar Ahmed, other lawmakers, security aides and journalists to scamper for safety.
Meanwhile, Governor Yahaya Bello, speaking through his Director-General, Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo has condemned the dastardly act and ordered his Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (rtd) to collaborate with security agencies in fishing out the perpetrators and make them face the full wrath of the law.
