The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar on Monday urged the Federal Government to focus on the devolution of Nigeria’s dams to encourage all-year farming practices whose yields, he said, will be capable of feeding the continent of Africa.
Alhaji Abubakar who made the call while speaking at the Niger State Investment Summit in Minna said rather than restructuring the country, proper utilisation of the nation’s dams would enable farmers produce assorted food and cash crops for both local consumption and exports.
He said: “Rather than the clamour for restructuring the country, emphasis should be on the Federal Government releasing dams across the country to state governments for massive participation of Nigerians in all-year farming seasons.
“We have the ability and technical knowledge to feed the continent, through the provision of modern farming implements for our teeming farmers,” he added.
The monarch further urged the government to expedite action towards the completion of major federal roads to aid smooth development, adding that Nigeria as a nation had all the needed material and human resources to better the lots of its citizens.
