The Federal Government of Nigeria has donated the sum of $1 million and assorted relief materials to victims of the mudslide which left over 300 people dead in Sierra Leone.
Presenting the cash and relief items to his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Samura Koroma in Freetown, the country’s capital on Tuesday, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama said President Muhammadu Buhari sent them to express his profound sadness to the Sierra Leonean people and government over the catastrophic incident which occurred last week.
“We have come on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari who heard the sad tragedy that befell your country and your people,” Onyeama said.
“Myself, the Director-General of NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja and the representative of the Minister of Hsealth, Zainab Sheriff have come to express our profound sorrow and condolence for the large loss of lives, damage to properties and suffering of a large number of people in your country,” he added.
Onyeama further stated that the cash and relief materials which included items like bags of rice, beans, maize, sorghum, milk, spoons, blankets, mattresses, mosquito nets, medical supplies and toiletries was also to appreciate and strengthen the bonds that exists between both countries.
