The Presidency has said that Nigerians, as well as the nation’s judiciary and legislature are against the anti-corruption crusade of the current administration of Presient Muhammadu Buhari.
The Chairman, Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, Okoi Obono-Obla stated this while fielding questions on the Channels TV Programme, Sunrise Daily on Thursday.
Obono-Obla said since most Nigerians were pathologically corrupt, it has become a daunting task to tackle the menace hence it seemed as if President Buhari and his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo were the only ones left in the crusade.
“It is chilling, daunting, outrageous and shocking but I am not surprised because corruption has become pandemic and endemic, most Nigerians are pathologically corrupt,” Obono-Obla said while reacting to the Nigerian Corruption Survey 2017 which stated that Nigerians paid bribes to the tune of N400 billion between 2015 and 2016.
“This government wants to fight corruption but what is the challenge? Nigerians do not want to support the fight against corruption, the judiciary, and the legislature do not want to support the fight against corruption. It is as if only the President and Vice-President are in support of the war against corruption,” he added.
He argued that laws, including the Recovery of Public Property Special Provisions Act Cap R4 Laws of the Federation that has been existing since 1963 could be used to jail corrupt people but previous governments were not courageous and honest enough to take the initiative.
