Nigeria’s Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has said that the problems bedeviling the country are a result of mismanagement of funds not their inavailability as believed in many quarters.
According to a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande on Sunday, Prof. Osinbajo made the disclosure while receiving Dr Oluyinka Olutoye, a US-based Nigerian doctor who led a medical team who successfully performed an operation on a foetus.
Describing Olutoye’s milestone achievement as remarkable, the Acting President hinted that the experience he has so far gathered while in the presidency showed that the country could be well run if its resources were not mismanaged.
“The problem is not about the availability of resources, but it is the mismanagement. When we were making over $100 per barrel, we were owing oil JVC cash calls, not able to pay salaries and owing contractors,” Prof. Osinbajo said.
He added: “Now that we are down in earnings by 60 percent, we have sorted out the problem of cash calls and are able to support states to pay salaries”.
Earlier in his speech, Dr Olutoye who performed the miraculous operation alongside his gynaecologist wife, Toyin and Dr. Oluyemi Fowode, a paediatric gynaecologist, attributed his successes in the field of medicine to his Nigerian training and education at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
