President Muhammadu Buhari has finally sacked Mr Babachir Lawal and appointed Mr Boss Mustapha as the new Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This was announced in a tweet by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.
Babachir Lawal was suspended on the 19th of April, 2017, after he was alleged to have personally benefitted from contracts awarded under the Presidential Initiative on the North East (PINE). The allegations against him as well as those of gross financial misconduct levelled against the then head of the National Intelligence Agency, Mr Ayodele Oke were eventually investigated by a panel headed by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.
Months of delay by President Buhari in making known his decision on the report of the panel caused what was obviously a national outrage by Nigerians who thought the President had lost the war on corruption. To those Nigerians, Buhari was unable to act because those who were the subjects of the investigation were his friends who played key roles in his administration. His action this Monday therefore goes a long way in assuaging the concerns of many a Nigerian.
Buhari has also terminated the appointment of the Director- General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ayodele Oke.
The new Secretary to the Government of the Federation,Boss Mustapha hails from Adamawa State. A lawyer, management consultant and APC stalwart, he has until now been the Managing Director of the Federal Inland Waterways Authority.
