The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the killing of two police officers on duty and the abduction of an expatriate engineer by a gang of 15 gunmen at a construction site in the state.
Spokesman of the Command in the state, ASP William Aya while confirming the incident to newsmen in Lokoja on Tuesday said Inspector Ezekiel Negedu and Sergeant Gini John were killed while on guard duty at the site located along Obajana- Oshokoshoko- Kabba Road.
Aya revealed that while Sgt. John died on the spot, Inspector Negedu died on arrival at the hospital after putting up a gallant fight and resisting attempts by the invading gunmen to wreak further havoc.
According to Aya, about 15 gunmen emerged from a nearby bush and attacked the construction site of A.G. Dangote Company currently handling the rehabilitation of the 45 kilometer Obajana – Kabba Road.
He gave the name of the abducted expatriate as Jose Machada, a Portuguese civil engineer who, along with other expatriates and Nigerians were inspecting the ongoing project when the gunmen struck.
While expressing sadness over the loss of the two policemen in the ungodly incident, Aya said the Police Commissioner in the state, Ali Janga has assembled a crack team comprising men of the Special Anti – Robbery Squad, Counter Terrorism Unit and mobile policemen and headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police to comb the bush and rescue the victim.
He disclosed that Janga had also visited the scene where he met with top officials and workers of the construction company and assured them of adequate security and safe rescue of the abducted expatriate.
