Parents and school authorities have revealed that at least 94 school girls from the Government Girls Science and Technical Secondary School in Dapchi, Bursari Local Government Area of Yobe State are missing after it was attacked by the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram.
The militants had on Monday invaded Dapchi town with over 18 gun trucks at about 7pm, shooting sporadically and ransacking the school after the staff and students had fled into the nearby bush.
Although the raid happened on Monday, the school authorities and parents waited till Tuesday to conduct a head count to ascertain the exact situation. After the headcount, it was discovered that at least 94 of the girls were still unaccounted for.
The school has been closed down while the state’s education authorities and security forces have commenced efforts to locate the missing school girls.
However, the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmaliki Sumonu on Tuesday said no one was killed and no school girl was abducted by the insurgents during the attack.
Sumonu told journalists in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital that three males were abducted by the insurgents in a remote community in Geidam Local Government Area few hours after the attack at Dapchi.
He said so far, there was no report of abduction of any of the school girls as the command was still collecting the details of the attack, including roll call of the students in the school as well as that of the community.
