A few days after the Nigerian military said the Islamist terrorist group, Boko Haram had been completely decimated, the insurgents on Sunday night stormed a village in Borno State and killed three persons.
The group which is affiliated to Islamic State (IS) reportedly attacked Alau – Kofa village, located some 12 kilometers from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital around 8:00 pm firing guns and rocket – propelled grenades (RPGs).
Eye witness accounts said three persons were burnt alive, seven others injured while all the houses in the community, which was also attacked last week Wednesday were razed down together with foodstuffs.
Major General Nicolas Rogers, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole had on Saturday announced that the insurgent group had been completely defeated by the Nigerian military who were now focused on clearing the Sambisa forest which used to be the enclave of the group.
Nicolas said this during the inauguration of the Nigeria-Cameroon Military Joint Mission in Maiduguri. He said his troops under Operation Deep Punch II had on Friday dislodged and occupied the insurgents’ tactical grounds. Camp Zairo.
He claimed that hundreds of insurgents had surrendered while several others had fled their enclave from where hundreds of civilians have been rescued.
“My soldiers are in the heart of Boko Haram enclave, that is Camp Zairo, the gallant troops have total control of Sambisa forest. We have broken the heart and soul of Shekau’s group, taking over the camp and its environs.
“They are on the run and we are pursuing them to wherever they go. This time around there is no place for escape anywhere. We had earlier asked those of them that want to surrender to do so and we are still asking them to come out and surrender otherwise they are going to make it the hard way,” Nicolas said.
