Suspected herdsmen on Thursday attacked Waku village and a part of Gbajimba town, both in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two persons and destroying a farmhouse belonging to the State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
The fresh attack came a day after Yogbo, another community in the same local government area was raided by suspected herdsmen, leaving six persons dead while many farmlands and property were destroyed.
The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni while confirming the attack said the herdsmen, who were backed by militia gangs invaded the communities on Monday afternoon, unleashing mayhem before they were chased out by the police.
Mr. Anthony Shawon, the Chairman of Guma Local Government Area who also confirmed the attack, expressed concern that the herdsmen may overrun the local government headquarters at the rate they were operating.
His words: “The herdsmen, backed by their militia invaded Waku village this afternoon (Monday) and killed two persons. They are also getting close to Gbajimba town, the local government headquarters. As I speak to you, they have attacked and sacked Governor Ortom’s farmhouse in Gbajimba.
He added: “Our fear is that if we are not careful, they might overrun the local government headquarters the way they are going.”
While commending the police for saving Yogbo community from being overrun by the marauding herdsmen, Shawon urged the command to remain resolute in sustaining the resistance against the incursion of the herdsmen.
