The Abia State Police Command has arrested and paraded about seven Biafra activists in Aba, Abia State while they were holding a meeting inside a Jewish synagogue.
The Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi while parading the suspects on Monday in Umuahia said they were apprehended with insignias of Biafra and that of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), stressing that IPOB remained a proscribed terrorist organization.
Mr. Ogbizi revealed that members of IPOB have recently devised new tactics of furthering their agitation for Biafra by joining the same religious group of their estranged leader, Nnamdi Kanu and using their synagogue as a clandestine meeting place.
On why the Police also paraded some members of the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) since the organization was not outlawed, Ogbizi said they were arrested because they acted contrary to the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He maintained that the Nigeria Police would not allow any part of Abia State to be used as a “breeding ground for terrorists.”
Disturbed by the development, the Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has called for the immediate release of the arrested Biafra agitators, insisting they had committed no offence to be paraded as criminals.
Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the National President of OYC said the police had no moral justification to arrest peaceful agitators seeking self determination while armed herdsmen continue to kill without being checked.
Isiguzoro advised the nation’s security agencies to go after the killer herdsmen who are committing genocide across the country instead of dissipating energy and resources on non-violent agitators.
