The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to review the salaries of members of the National Assembly and those of ministers with a view to creating more jobs for unemployed Nigerian youths.
In a statement which he addressed to the President on Sunday, the Emir enjoined political office holders to make selfless sacrifices towards salvaging the country from its current economic quagmire.
He argued that if the salary of each member of the National Assembly was divided into two, it would go a long way in providing funds that could be used to create jobs for about 70,400 jobless Nigerians at a salary of between ₦90,000 and ₦92,500 monthly.
He said: “Where is the change? Change should start with the National Assembly. A Senator receives ₦36 million monthly. If this is divided into two, it comes to ₦18 million.
“The second part of the ₦18 million can be used to create jobs for 200 Nigerians each earning ₦90,000 monthly. When you multiply 200 people by 109 Senators, this will keep 21,800 Nigerians gainfully employed.
“In short, 200 Nigerians will be able to live a comfortable life on half a Senator’s salary.”
While highlighting the seeming disparities in the standard of living of public office holders especially legislators, the Emir further maintained that a House of Representatives member who receives ₦25 million monthly was capable of employing 135 Nigerians with monthly salaries of ₦92,500 each.
