President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered ministers and heads of parastatals to appear before the National Assembly to defend their 2018 budget estimates.
The order was issued shortly after the President met behind closed doors with the leadership of the National Assembly led by the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki at the Presidential Villa on Thursday night.
Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha said the meeting was held to strengthen the harmonious relationship existing between the legislative and executive arms of government.
“The President gave them updates on security, economy, job creation, processes in the National Assembly especially with regards to the budget and need to conclude on time and Mr. President has given instructions that all ministers and heads of parastatals should ensure that they appear before the National Assembly to defend their submissions so that we can get this out of the way.
“You know this is a very dynamic year and there are preparations for elections and we are having quite a number of security challenges and so if we don’t appropriate, where will the money come from?” Mr. Mustapha said.
Also speaking after the meeting, Senate President Bukola Saraki said the leadership of the National Assembly used the opportunity to give the President their opinions on the budget, security and other pressing national issues.
Saraki noted that although the National Assembly was working assiduously towards the quick passage of the 2018 budget, some government agencies were yet to defend their proposals hence the prolonged delay.
