The Edo State Police Command on Tuesday paraded a notorious kidnapper, Muritala Umaru who confessed to having to having made a fortune of over ₦100 million from kidnapping.
An AK-47 rifle with breech number K0340119 and 10 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from Umaru who is alleged to be responsible for various abductions in parts of Edo and other neighbouring states.
Umar said he started the criminal business of kidnapping in Okene, Kogi State and had participated in several kidnapping operations in Edo State. He added that his gang had 10 AK-47 rifles with which they carried out their kidnappings.
He said it was a man whom he called “Chief” from an Edo community who gave them the identities of their victims.
“I am married. I stay in Auchi but I was born in Lokoja. I am into kidnapping. I have kidnapped over 50 persons.
“We kidnapped them when they were travelling. One man gave us target. I collected ₦3 million in our last operation. It is my boss that kills people. He has killed many people. We operate in Auchi, Ekpoma, Okene and other places.
Babatunde Kokumo, the Edo State Police Commissioner said Umaru is a notorious kidnapper who disguised himself as a herder and has been in and out of prison. He added that the suspect was apprehended after he was identified by a prison official he had earlier abducted.
