The Kaduna State Police Command has identified a serving lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani (APC, Kaduna Central) as a person of interest in an ongoing homicide investigation.
Consequently, the State Commissioner of Police, Austin Iwar has written to the Senator requesting him to appear on April 30 at the Command Headquarters in Kaduna for questioning.
Iwar said the invitation was in connection with a case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide transferred to his office by 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna accompanied by an exhibit audio CD in which the Senator’s name was mentioned by the principal suspect.
The Commissioner added in the letter which was addressed to Senator Sani through the Clerk of the National Assembly that the invitation was also to enable them fairly and timely conclude investigations on the matter.
Although the specific case for which the Senator is being sought could not be immediately ascertained, there have been series of violent clashes and confrontations between his supporters and loyalists of Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State – a crisis which has consequently factionalized the All Progressives Congress in the state.
Senator Sani has however blamed the state governor of being responsible for the moves by the police, alleging that the Kaduna State government had concluded plans to frame him up with a murder case.
“There is an attempt to frame me up with a murder case by the Kaduna State Governor using the police. A letter has been written from the office of the Commissioner of Police but it has not been delivered to us,” Sani said.
