A knife-wielding man on Thursday reportedly killed his mother and sister in the Paris suburb of Trappes and seriously wounded a third person.
According to the French Interior Ministry, the young man killed his victims in the street before taking refuge in a house. He was later shot dead by police when he left the house and ran towards them in a threatening manner.
The Islamic State issued a statement before it was confirmed that the victims were relatives of the attacker, claiming responsibility for the attack but provided no evidence.
The French counter-terrorism officials have yet to be asked to join the investigations aimed at unraveling the motives for the attack.
Trappes is an underprivileged town situated in an overall wealthy area located west of Paris where radicalized youths from the town of about 30,000 inhabitants have left for Syria.
