About 14 members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday impeached the Speaker, Kola Oluwawole and sacked the Deputy Speaker, Sina Animasaun, both members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
The lawmakers subsequently elected the former Deputy Leader, Mr. Adeniran Alagbada who represents Ise constituency as the new Speaker, Segundo Adewunmi as new Deputy Speaker while the Minority Leader, Gboyega Aribisogan was elected as new House Leader of Business.
Alagbada defected from PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in June along with his political mentor, Prince Dayo Adeyeye who left the PDP following his loss at the state gubernatorial primaries of the party.
Reacting to the development, the ousted Speaker described his impeachment as a rape on democracy and the lowest form of lawlessness and illegality.
A statement released through his Special Assistant on Media, Steven Gbadamosi alleged that the lawmakers who carried out the illegal impeachment were provided cover by the police who prevented other members of the House and staff from gaining access into the legislative complex.
The change in leadership is believed to have been effected in anticipation of the change of government as outgoing governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose is expected to make way for the incoming Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi who will be inaugurated on Tuesday.
