The Nigerian Senate has directed the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly within one week or risk the assembly being taken over.
The lawmakers warned that if the governor fails to do so within the stipulated time, the National Assembly would be left with no option but to invoke its powers as contained in the Constitution by taking over the legislative functions of the Edo Assembly.
The warning followed the adoption of the report of the Senate ad hoc committee on the Edo State House of Assembly crisis which was presented by its chairman, Senator Sabi Abdullahi during Tuesday’s plenary.
The Senate’s resolution is also in alignment with that of the House of Representatives which issued a similar directive two weeks ago.
