The Federal High Court, Abuja has threatened to jail the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) , Yusuf Bichi over the continued detention of the convener of the RevolutionNow protests, Omoyele Sowore.
The court gave the warning in a notice dated Thursday, September 26 and titled ‘Notice of Disobedience to Order Of Court’, addressed to Bichi.
In the notice, the Federal High Court directed the DSS boss to comply with its directive or face grave consequences, which includes ‘commitment to prison’.
Recall that Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the last general elections has remained in detention more than 24 hours after meeting his bail condition as set by Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court on Tuesday.
Sowore, who was arrested in Lagos on August 3 was slammed with a seven-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and insulting President Muhammadu Buhari.
The DSS had claimed that Sowore was still in their custody because they had not received a copy of the court order granting him bail from his legal team led by Femi Falana (SAN).
The DSS spokesperson, Dr. Peter Afunnaya who stated this on Thursday said the DSS as a law-abiding agency, has the highest regard for the laws of the land and would not do anything to undermine law and order.
His words: “We have not received the court order. And his (Sowore’s) counsel is a very senior member of the bar and he knows the process to follow. This process has not been followed.”
