Some unknown gunmen have attacked the Otuoke residence of former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, killing a soldier and injuring another in the process.
This was revealed in a statement by the Media Adviser to Dr Jonathan, Ikechukwu Eze. He said the attack occurred at 1:30 am , Tuesday morning.
The statement stated that the assailants came in about five engine boats and stormed the security post about 100 metres away from Jonathan’s residence but met resistance by soldiers who engaged them in a firefight.
The military overpowered the criminals, forcing them to retreat, but one soldier was killed in the fight while another was injured.
The former President was not at his Otuoke home during the attack, but in Yenegoa.
Jonathan has condoled with the family of the deceased soldier and the military. He has also asked security authorities to bring the culprits to book.
President Muhammadu Buhari has called the former President to sympathize with him over the incident. This was disclosed in a statement by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
Buhari regretted the loss of life of a soldier and condoled with his family members and the military. He commended the other soldiers on guard who were able to repel the attack.
President Buhari also gave an assurance that the protection of the life of former President Jonathan and all citizens of the country would continue to be the major preoccupation of his administration.
