Suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele was granted bail today by the Federal High Court in Lagos. Emefiele has been held in DSS custody for over a month leading up to today’s court appearance.
The embattled CBN chief was charged with two counts of illegal firearm possession by the Department of State Services (DSS). Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges through his lawyer, Joseph Daudu SAN, who then applied for bail given the bailable nature of the offences.
Justice Nicolas Oweibo, the presiding judge, approved bail at N20 million, along with a surety of equal amount. Emefiele was brought to the courthouse at 9:23 AM in an unmarked white Hilux van, assisted into the building by an unidentified woman.
