In a move to reinvigorate Nigeria’s battle against corruption, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu as the new Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
Aliyu, formerly the Attorney General and Justice Commissioner of Jigawa State, was nominated by Tinubu in line with the President’s mandate to reform key institutions under the Renewed Hope agenda. His appointment as ICPC chair is subject to Senate confirmation.
The outgoing ICPC chairman requested early pre-retirement leave beginning November 4th, ahead of the expiration of his tenure in February 2024. Tinubu also appointed Clifford Okwudiri Oparaodu as the new ICPC Secretary immediately, as this role does not need Senate approval.
The Presidency stated that Aliyu’s nomination underscores Tinubu’s commitment to invigorating the fight against corruption without fear or favor. The administration urged the incoming ICPC leadership to always remain above board and impartial in tackling all matters before the anti-graft agency.
With the appointment of a new chairman and secretary, the ICPC will look to intensify efforts to combat bribery, graft and ethical violations across Nigeria’s public sector. Tinubu sees the renewed anti-corruption drive as crucial to instilling transparency and upholding the rule of law.
