Ogbe Joehness Omoruyi by every standard is a distinguished Nigerian. He is a versatile physician with vast experience in healthcare delivery and management. He is also a soldier who voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Army after attaining the lofty rank of Colonel. Indeed, he bowed out of the Army with lots of accolades, recognition and awards.
Today, Col. (Dr) Ogbe Joehness Omoruyi is a strong name in private medical practice. He is a Consultant Plastic Surgeon and the Medical Director /Chief Executive Officer of Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a hospital which he founded in Lagos.
Born on March 20, 1974, he hails from Ebelle Town in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State. He had his primary school education at Olua Primary School, Benin – City. He went on to attend Eghosa Grammar School in the same city from 1985 to 1991. He was admitted to study medicine at the famous University of Benin in 1993. He graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree in the year 2000.
As a Medical House Officer, he enlisted in the Nigerian Army on 3rd April 2001, trained in the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna and was commissioned as Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army Medical Corps (NAMC) on 17th November 2001. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2005, Major in 2010, Lieutenant Colonel in 2015, and to the rank of Colonel in 2020.
During his years of active military service, he served in the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). He also served three tours of duty in the North East of Nigeria: Operation Zaman Lafiya, Operation Lafiya Dole and Operation Hadin Kai. During these periods, he performed several life and limb-saving surgeries for the troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria as well as for some personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
Some notable appointments he held include: Regimental Medical Officer (RMO); General Duty Medical Officer (GDMO), Specialist Plastic Surgeon, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Acting Director, Directorate of Monitoring & Evaluation, Acting Commander of Field & Military Hospitals, Senior Consultant Plastic Surgeon and Chief Consultant Plastic Surgeon which was the peak of his professional career in the Military.
He voluntarily retired from the Army in 2022 after 21 years in service as Chief Consultant Plastic Surgeon.
Omoruyi’s sterling military career saw him occupy several command positions. He was Commander, 8 Division Medical Services Hospital Monguno, Borno State (2016 to 2017); Director, Directorate of Monitoring and Evaluation, Headquarters, Nigerian Army Medical Corp, Bonny Camp, Lagos 2018 to 2019; Commander, Military Hospital, Benin, Edo State (2019 to 2020) and Commander, 7 Division Medical Service Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State (2020 to 2022).
He has participated in several Fellowship Trainings and courses. They include Plastic Surgery Residency Training at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos from October 2006 to October 2012. British Association of Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery Fellowship, UK, from February to May 2011, International Facial Plastic Surgery Fellowship, Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from May till June 2011. He was the first African to have been invited to that fellowship programme.
Expectedly, Col. Omoruyi has received several civil awards namely: Best Student in Internal Medicine 98/99 academic session, University of Benin (2000). Third Best Overall Graduating Medical Student 98/99 academic session, University of Benin (2000), the Development in Nigeria Merit Award (DINMA)/PSR Magazine (2015), Plastic Surgery Foundation Scholarship Award (USA) (Oct, 2017), Dove Health Care Awards as Most Outstanding Plastic Surgery Hospital to Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (April 2023).
His military awards include Flight Service Star (FSS). He was also nominated for the Chief of Army Staff Award in July 2017. He was the second best participant in the Senior Executive Management Courses (8 September 2017). He was also decorated with the Meritorious Service Star (MSS) and Field Command Medal X2.
Dr Ogbe Omoruyi is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) (Plast), a Member of the Nigerian Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (NAPRAS) and an International Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
He has done a lot of research and has numerous publications to his credit. He has excellent skills in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He is also proficient in Trauma and many other subspecialties of surgery.
It is in recognition of his contribution to national development in the field of Human Medicine (Cosmetic Surgery) that Dr Ogbe Joehness Omoruyi was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Development in Nigeria Merit Award which is part of the PSR National Awards.
