Victor Osimhen was crowned the 2023 CAF African Player of the Year last night, becoming the first Nigerian player to win the honor since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999.

The Napoli striker claimed the prestigious award after fighting off competition from Moroccan right-back Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.

“I’m delighted to be recognized with this award. It’s been a long journey to get here but I couldn’t have done it without my club and country teammates,” said an elated Osimhen.

In the women’s category, Asisat Oshoala cemented her status as a legend of the African game by winning a record-extending sixth Player of the Year award.

The iconic Super Falcons striker saw off challengers Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa and Zambian goal machine Barbara Banda.

There was more joy for Nigeria as young goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie picked up the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year prize. The Super Falcons also emerged as Women’s National Team of the Year.

Osimhen enjoyed a stellar 2022, scoring 18 goals to help fire Napoli to the top of Serie A. With the Partenopei still competing on multiple fronts, the 24-year-old will be hoping for more success this season.
