In a significant move to address hunger across Nigeria, the House of Representatives has committed to donating 50% of their salaries for six months. The decision was made during a plenary session on Thursday, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu proposed the motion, urging his fellow lawmakers to support this gesture of solidarity with the Nigerian people. “This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50% of our salary for a period of six months,” Kalu stated during the session.

Currently, each member of the House earns a monthly salary of N600,000. By agreeing to a 50% pay cut, each member will contribute N300,000 monthly to a collective fund. This initiative will generate N108 million per month and a total of N648 million over six months for the Federal Government’s efforts to alleviate hunger.
