The National Assembly has passed the Police Act Amendment Bill, which aims to ensure that a person appointed as Inspector General of Police (IGP) remains in office until the completion of the term specified in their appointment letter. This move is part of a broader effort to reform and modernize policing in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu submitted the Bill to both the House of Representatives and the Senate on Tuesday, seeking to amend the tenure provisions for the IGP. The proposed amendment to the Nigeria Police Act 2020 aims to secure the IGP’s tenure and enhance police operations by increasing accountability, modernizing policing methods, and fostering a more harmonious relationship between the police and the community.
The Bill swiftly passed through its second and third readings in both chambers on Tuesday, with lawmakers in the green and red chambers approving the measure during separate sessions.
The Bill is now awaiting President Tinubu’s signature to become law.
