Twelve inmates escaped from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, in the early hours of Monday, prompting swift action from security agencies.

The Kogi State Government confirmed the jailbreak in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo. He commended security operatives for their rapid response and described the escape as ‘unfortunate.’

Fanwo assured the public that the government is taking decisive measures to prevent future occurrences. He highlighted concerns surrounding the nature of the escape, particularly the theory that the inmates fled through a tower without causing any structural damage.

“This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system,” Fanwo stated.

Governor Ahmed Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to strengthen security measures and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The state government reiterated its commitment to supporting federal security agencies by providing logistics and necessary resources to enhance their operational effectiveness.

While investigations continue, officials have assured residents that the situation remains under control.

“There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo added.
