The Federal Government has declared Thursday, May 1, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s International Workers’ Day, celebrating the contributions of Nigerian workers to national development.

The announcement was made on Tuesday in a statement issued by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who commended the diligence, resilience, and sacrifices of workers across the country.

Recognising their vital role in both the internal and external growth of Nigeria, the minister called on workers to continue promoting peace, innovation, and productivity — essential values he described as pillars for industrialisation and economic progress.

“There is dignity in labour; the dedication and commitment to the work we do is vital to nation-building,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo reassured citizens of the administration’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all Nigerians and foreigners, adding that President Bola Tinubu’s government remains focused on delivering on the promises of its Renewed Hope Agenda.

He further urged workers to raise the standards of their professions, stating that improved work ethics and service delivery would enhance governance and allow citizens to fully benefit from the country’s resources.

While extending warm wishes for a peaceful and joyful Workers’ Day celebration, the minister encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful and steadfast in contributing to national unity and progress.
