The Southeast Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the cancellation of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) following widespread technical failures that disrupted the test for nearly 380,000 candidates.
In a statement issued Monday and signed by caucus leader Igariwey Iduma Enwo, the lawmakers described the mishap as a “catastrophic institutional failure” and demanded the immediate resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede.
The caucus expressed deep concern over the impact on students from the southeastern states, many of whom were required to resit the exam with less than 48 hours’ notice—despite clashes with ongoing WAEC examinations.
They also criticised JAMB’s response as inadequate and called for the suspension of officials responsible for its digital operations and logistics.
The lawmakers urged that a new exam date be fixed after WAEC and NECO to prevent further disadvantage to affected students and restore public confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s examination system.
