In a landmark move poised to reshape Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced a nationwide free distribution of petrol and diesel to marketers, dealers, and high-volume users beginning August 15, 2025.
The Lagos-based refinery made the announcement in a statement on Sunday, outlining a sweeping initiative aimed at boosting energy access, driving economic growth, and cutting logistics costs across the country.
As part of the rollout, the refinery revealed it has acquired 4,000 brand-new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered tankers to ensure efficient product delivery from its facility to all corners of Nigeria.
“In addition, the refinery will offer a credit facility to buyers of a minimum of 500,000 litres, allowing them to obtain an additional 500,000 litres on credit for two weeks, under a bank guarantee,” the statement said.
The company also disclosed significant investments in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations, commonly known as daughter booster stations, and a supporting fleet of over 100 CNG tankers to facilitate nationwide distribution.
According to the statement, the initiative is part of Dangote’s broader strategy to:
- Eliminate transportation and logistics bottlenecks,
- Promote clean energy solutions,
- Support job creation and SME development,
- Improve fuel access in rural and underserved communities,
- Stimulate investor confidence in the petroleum sector.
“This strategic programme is part of our broader commitment to eliminating logistics costs, enhancing energy efficiency, promoting sustainability and supporting Nigeria’s economic development,” the statement read. “It is expected to revitalise previously inactive petrol stations, thereby driving job creation, stimulating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), increasing government revenue, improving fuel access… and strengthening investor confidence.”
Calling the effort a “major milestone,” Dangote Refinery reaffirmed its pledge to make affordable energy accessible to all Nigerians.
“Our goal is to provide equitable access to affordable fuel for all Nigerians, regardless of location. Dangote Refinery is dedicated to ensuring that no place is left behind.”
