In response to a surge of brutal attacks in Benue State, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in the region on Monday and ordered the immediate deployment of additional tactical teams to restore order and reinforce security.
The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the development in a brief statement posted via X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“IGP arrives Benue, orders for additional deployment of tactical teams.”
The deployment comes amid widespread public outrage and mounting pressure on the Federal Government to take decisive action. Social media has been flooded with calls for a state of emergency in Benue following a two-day killing spree by suspected herders.
At least 45 people were confirmed dead in Guma Local Government Area, although local leaders fear the death toll could be significantly higher.
