The United States Department of State has announced new visa restrictions for Nigerian citizens, limiting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas to single-entry with a validity period of three months.
The updated policy was made public on Tuesday through a statement by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and takes immediate effect.
According to the announcement, “most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period.” However, it clarified that visas issued prior to July 8, 2025, will remain valid and unaffected.
The U.S. described the change as part of its “global visa reciprocity process,” a routine review that aligns visa rules based on security, technical standards, and the treatment U.S. citizens receive from other nations.
“This is a continuous process and is subject to review and change at any time, such as increasing or decreasing permitted entries and duration of validity,” the embassy noted.
The embassy cited several factors influencing the decision, including the need for secure travel documents, effective visa overstay management, and enhanced information-sharing between countries on security and criminal matters.
“The US Mission is working with the Government of Nigeria to ensure that Nigeria can meet the criteria,” the statement added, commending Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve its immigration and security systems.
Despite the restrictions, the embassy reaffirmed Washington’s diplomatic commitment to Nigeria, stating, “The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity.”
Nigerian travellers were urged to comply with visa terms, keep documents up to date, and ensure authenticity.
The embassy concluded by emphasizing the importance of continued cooperation with Nigeria, saying, “We look forward to continued cooperation at all levels with the Nigerian public and government officials to ensure safe and lawful travel between the United States and all countries.”
