Dr. Joy Oshun is a highly cerebral and experienced Consultant Cardiologist, currently serving as the Non-Invasive Cardiology Lead at Reddington Multi-Specialist Hospital, Victoria Island, Lagos. Renowned for her dedication to patient-centred care, she leads cardiovascular services with a blend of clinical excellence, precision diagnostics and genuine empathy.
Her journey in medicine began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria, in 2003. Driven by a passion for advancing heart health, she further honed her skills through a pivotal clinical observership at the prestigious Manchester Heart Centre, Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK in 2006. This experience helped in shaping her into the reliable cardiologist she is today.
Her postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos culminated in her winning the Dr. O. O. Elegbeleye Prize for Best Candidate in the Part One Fellowship Examination in 2009, the same year when she qualified as a Member of the Faculty of Internal Medicine of the West African College of Physicians. In 2010, she advanced her skills at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa.
Appointed Chief Resident of the Department of Internal Medicine at LUTH in 2012, she earned her Fellowship from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria that year, transitioning into private practice as a Consultant Physician and Cardiologist. In 2023, she made history as the first West African recipient of the Cardiovascular Imaging Training Award from the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI), receiving advanced training in Italy and the UK.
A member of the Nigerian Cardiac Society and European Society of Cardiology, she joined the latter’s Women’s Task Force in Cardiovascular Imaging in 2023. Her research on hypertension and heart failure in Nigerian populations, alongside mentoring healthcare professionals in non-invasive cardiac diagnostics and leading echocardiography training across Nigeria and East Africa, highlight her impact.
Dr. Oshun’s passion for human medicine, particularly cardiology, is immense. Her efforts focus on advancing clinical research, enhancing professional development and improving cardiovascular care quality in Nigeria. Her unwavering dedication inspires transformative change in heart health.
It was in recognition of her accomplishments and contribution to national development in the sphere of Human Medicine (Cardiology) that Dr. Joy Oshun was deemed worthy to be conferred with the Woman of Merit Gold Award.
