The Federal Government has officially handed over four major federal road projects in Abia State to the state government for immediate completion, with a 30-day ultimatum issued to contractors to resume work or face sanctions.

The roads transferred to Governor Alex Otti’s administration include the Owerri–Umuaka Road, Onuigbo–Umuahia Road, the Omezuo Bridge, and the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road.

According to government officials, the handover followed a formal request from the Abia State Government to the presidency, which approved the transfer as part of efforts to accelerate infrastructure development and improve transportation within the Southeast region.

Documents released after the ceremony indicated that federal and state engineers will jointly oversee the projects, ensuring seamless supervision and adherence to established handover protocols.

Federal officials said the initiative aims to eliminate long-standing bottlenecks that have hampered commerce and disrupted travel across the state.

In response, the Abia State Government pledged to prioritise the projects and ensure contractors comply with quality and safety standards.

Governor Otti’s administration described the move as a significant step toward improving road connectivity, boosting economic activity, and enhancing the overall infrastructure landscape in Abia State.
