Paris Saint-Germain fullback Achraf Hakimi has been crowned the 2025 African Player of the Year, earning the continent’s highest individual football honour at the CAF Awards held Wednesday in Rabat, Morocco.

Hakimi, 27, beat finalists Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray to the award, becoming the first defender in over a decade to claim the title. The honour, historically dominated by attacking players, celebrates outstanding contributions by African footballers for both club and country.

“This award means a lot to me and to my country,” Hakimi said after receiving the trophy. “I’ve worked hard for moments like this, and I’m proud to represent Morocco on the global stage.”

CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised the Moroccan star as “a world-class athlete who continues to elevate African football,” noting his leadership and consistent elite performances.

Hakimi’s influence has been pivotal for both PSG and the Moroccan national team, reinforcing the strength of Morocco’s rising football generation, which gained global attention during the nation’s historic 2022 World Cup semi-final run.

In the women’s category, Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie also made headlines, winning the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the third consecutive time. The Super Falcons goalkeeper received widespread commendation, with CAF describing her achievement as a milestone moment for women’s football on the continent.
