The Germany has withdrawn its support for Israel in the genocide case filed by South Africa at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
A spokesperson for Germany’s Foreign Ministry said Berlin, now directly involved in separate proceedings before the court, has decided not to intervene in the case concerning Israel.
South Africa filed the suit in 2023, accusing Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza—an allegation Israel has strongly denied.
Germany had initially rejected the claims as baseless and signaled support for Israel, but has now shifted its focus to a separate case brought by Nicaragua, which accuses Berlin of aiding the conflict through arms supplies.
While rejecting Nicaragua’s allegations, German officials said they would await the outcome of the ICJ proceedings before taking further positions.
