Defending champions Argentina and Switzerland booked their places in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after dramatic Round of 16 victories on Tuesday.

Argentina produced a stunning comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta after trailing 2-0. Egypt took control with first-half goals from Ibrahim and Zico, while Lionel Messi also missed a penalty before the break. Argentina fought back through Cristian Romero’s header, Messi’s equaliser and a stoppage-time winner from Enzo Fernández to seal a remarkable turnaround and keep their title defence alive.

In Vancouver, Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after edging Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made a crucial save in the shootout before Ruben Vargas converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Swiss through.

The results completed the Round of 16 fixtures, with Argentina set to face Switzerland in the quarter-finals as both teams continue their quest for World Cup glory.
