The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has elected Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), as its next president after she emerged victorious in the association’s presidential election, the results of which were announced on Sunday.

Mrs Badejo-Okusanya, the only female among the three presidential candidates, secured 12,317 votes to win the election conducted through a 24-hour electronic voting process, which commenced at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday and ended at 7:34 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the final results, she garnered 47.18 per cent of the 26,106 valid votes cast, defeating her two challengers to emerge as president-elect.

With the victory, Badejo-Okusanya will become the 33rd President of the NBA and only the second woman to lead the association since its establishment in 1933, ending a 34-year wait for another female president.

In the election for General Secretary, Afam Okeke emerged victorious after polling 8,478 votes to defeat his opponents.

The newly elected national officers will serve a two-year tenure, from 2026 to 2028.

Badejo-Okusanya was absent when the election results were announced at the NBA headquarters in Abuja due to a flight delay. Speaking on her behalf, a member of her campaign team, Aminu Gadanya, SAN, said the president-elect was committed to extending a “handshake of friendship” to all the candidates who contested the election, stressing her desire to unite the association following the polls.
