The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has continued coordinating search and rescue operations following a boat mishap at Malamawa Yandutse in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
In Situation Update No. 2 released at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, NEMA said eight additional passengers were confirmed to have escaped unassisted, bringing the total number of survivors to 23.
Preliminary findings showed that the boat was carrying 37 passengers, comprising 28 females and nine males, including children. So far, 23 people have been rescued alive, while five females were confirmed dead.
Search efforts are ongoing for the remaining nine missing passengers, comprising eight females and one male.
The rescue operation is being conducted by the Jigawa State Fire Service, local divers, community volunteers and other stakeholders. NEMA’s Kano Operations Office is coordinating the response in collaboration with the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) and other relevant agencies.
NEMA said it remains committed to sustaining the search and rescue operation until all the missing persons are accounted for, adding that further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
