The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed that 28 people were killed in a terrorist attack by suspected Lakurawa fighters on Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.

Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed the casualty figure on Tuesday, noting that the nature of the attack initially made it difficult to determine the exact number of victims. The Chief Imam of Ungushi Izala Jumu’at Mosque, Imam Aliyu, was among those killed.

Following the attack, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Paul Kaughna, visited the Forward Operating Base in Kebbe and affected communities to assess the situation.

The Army said it has strengthened its security architecture to prevent further terrorist infiltration and secure vulnerable border communities between Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Kaughna assured residents of the military’s commitment to responding swiftly to emerging threats and denying terrorist groups safe haven in the region.
